Tom Dempsey to join the Australian Volleyball Academy in 2021

The Australian Volleyball Academy (AVA) is excited to announce that Tom Dempsey will be joining its AVA athlete Cohort in Canberra for 2021.

Tom began playing volleyball in year seven for his school team, Aquinas College.

Tom has been consistently selected for state teams in both beach and indoor, since picking up the sport only a few years ago.

“I’m really excited to embrace this opportunity in joining the AVA” said Tom on his 2021 AVA signing” I hope to learn and apply as much as I can into my volleyball skills, and am ready for any challenge put in front of me”.

Men’s AVA Head Coach Brendan Garlick is excited for the opportunity to work with Tom in 2021, saying “Tom is an outstanding young man who has a real passion for performing at a high level in everything he takes on from academics to sport”.

“His passion for high performance will add enormous value to the environment at the AVA and challenge all those around Tom to keep reaching for higher levels every day.”

Tom heard about the AVA through other athletes that have previously been a part of the program and attended camps run by the AVA.

“It is to no surprise that Tom has been selected for the Australian Volleyball Academy”, said Volleyball WA CEO Robyn Kuhl.

“Year after year he was selected as the squad captain for both beach and indoor state teams as a junior, proving his leadership abilities, work ethic and future volleyball potential from a young age”.

Tom recently had the opportunity to play a beach round with former Beach Volleyballer Josh Court. Tom learnt a lot from this opportunity and even won his first AAA state tour in WA.

Tom is set to begin his journey with the AVA in January 2021, and he hopes to play on the World Tour in the future and represent Australia in beach volleyball at the highest level possible.

“Over the past few years, Tom’s WA coaches have had the pleasure of watching him grow into a mature young man with good character”, added Volleyball WA CEO Robyn Kuhl.

“Volleyball WA is excited to see what Tom accomplishes in Canberra and wish him the best of luck in his next volleyball journey”.

The primary objective of the Australian Volleyball Academy (AVA) is to identify and develop Olympic potential athletes for Volleyball and Beach Volleyball. It is the High-Performance Development Program for volleyball and beach volleyball athletes who aspire to reach the elite level of their sport.
