The Helloworld Travel Volleyroos take on Poland in their opening game of the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) in Poland to start a gruelling five-week campaign.
The Polish team for this opening game will be their strongest of the tournament with key players returning to play for the home side in front of a capacity crowd in one of the biggest indoor volleyball stadiums in the world.
Volleyroos star, Max Staples, says this makes the Polish team particularly hard to beat. This is coupled with the fact that the Poles are the reigning world champions.
Twenty-four year old Staples has spent the past season playing club volleyball in the Czech Republic where his team won the Czech Cup. So he is well aware of the strengths of many of the Polish players.
As the Volleyroos prepare for the start of the VNL, Staples says spirit within the team is high with the side relishing the prospect of taking on the bigger volleyball nations.
But he says 15 games in five weeks in five different countries can be daunting but exciting at the same time, “Once it gets going it becomes a haze. You can’t sleep, there’s jet lag, and often after games, you are too wired to sleep. But it’s great being part of the Volleyroos and travelling around with your best mates.”
The final round of the VNL before the playoffs sees Australia up against the defending champions Russia, China and Argentina in Brisbane.
Staples says his side is aiming for at least two wins out of the three games in Brisbane.
