Kienbaum, Germany: The Helloworld Travel mens Volleyroos might be ranked sixteenth in the world but they have just shown they are ready to upset the big boys in the upcoming Volleyball Nations League (VNL) by defeating world number ten Germany in a warm up match.
The Aussie mens team were outstanding wearing the highly fancied Germans down on their home turf over five thrilling sets. (22-25, 25-20, 30-28, 13-25, 15-10)
The locals got off to a fast start taking the first set 22-25 before Volleyroos coach Mark Lebedew let his men know they needed to switch on and show that famous Aussie determination and spirit needed to win.
The Volleyroos answered the call brilliantly taking the next two sets, the third in particular was the stuff that Aussie sporting teams are famous for around world grinding out a brilliant 30-28 set win and a 2-1 lead in the best of five sets.
Germany aren’t top 10 in the world for nothing and they came out in the crucial fourth set and showed why you can’t write them off blowing the Aussie off the court 13-25.
This wasn’t over yet! The Volleyroos dug deep one more time in the deciding fifth set to get the job done 15-10 and with it gain a whole heap of confidence ahead of their first offical match of the VNL next week.
“All wins bring confidence wherever they come and against whomever. The quality of today’s opponent was one big plus with this particular win.” said Volleyroos coach Mark Lebedew.
“It's the perfect start to our competition period. We were able to rotate the whole squad and we have established some good rhythm that we will need next week.”
Lincoln Williams and Paul Sanderson were the best scorers with 10 points each.
The Volleyroos have two more more warm up matches against Italy before taking on Japan in France to officially open their VNL campaign.
