The Australian Men’s Volleyball team finished on top of their pool after the preliminary rounds at the Asian Championships in Tehran, Iran.
Australia upset the 2011 and 2013 Asian Champions Iran 3-1. The Volleyroos recovering after losing the first set, winning 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22.
Australian coach, Mark Lebedew, says the enormity of the victory can’t be underestimated; “To win against Iran in Iran under any circumstance is a great result. In the beginning we gave a little too much respect to the environment, to the spectators, to the other team. But we started to see that today they weren’t at their best so we had a really good shot to win if we play our normal way. We were able to do that well enough to get over the line today. Tomorrow’s a rest day where we will try to get stronger somehow, and then we have a really busy schedule with matches five days in a row.“
Australia finish the preliminary rounds in top place with three consecutive victories over Qatar, Sri Lanka and Iran.
It also means Australia has qualified for January’s final qualifiers for the Tokyo Olympics.
