Australia's Helloworld Travel Volleyroos might not have got the result they wanted at the Volleyball Nations League Challenger Cup in Peru, but this young Aussie team gained invaluable experience on the world stage.
Coach Shannon Winzer, while proud of her charges, admitted stage fright might held them back against the big names of Bulgaria and Puerto Rico especially early on each match.
“I think nerves were a big factor in our game against Bulgaria and we definitely were not happy with our performance.” Said Winzer.
The loss to Bulgaria 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-15) was a disappointing start to the two match challenge with a great chance at stake to compete in the 2019 Volleyball Nations League.
The score was similar in the second match against Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-15) but the coach was much more pleased with the effort.
“In the second game against Puerto Rico we were able to play with them in the second set after a slow start in the first, but inconsistency crept back in for the third set.” Said Winzer.
“For such a young team it’s encouraging to see what we can do when we play well but with that comes a reminder of our inexperience in pressure situations and not being able to deliver consistent performances from start to finish.”
