Australia’s Paul Burnett and Marcus Ferguson have overcome two tough home-town favourite teams to be crowned the Asian U21 beach volleyball champions in Roi Et, Thailand.
Ferguson and Burnett continued the impressive form they had shown all tournament, beating Thailand’s Marudet and Jatoopon 21-17, 21-13 in the final.
Their gold-medal winning performance was even more impressive considering the titanic struggle the Australians had in their semi-final.
Burnett and Ferguson were pushed to a 21-13, 19-21, 16-14 win by Thailand’s Konsipong and Keattisak, who then went on to easily win the bronze medal.
Coach Mick Nelson was impressed by the attitude of all the Australians at the Asian Championships.
“The whole Australian team embraced the beach Volleyroos values and culture,” he said.
“Marcus and Paul’s performance in the final represented the Australian spirit from our big team.
“We are very proud of the result and how the whole group rallied together.”
