Australian Team Announced For Volleyfest


Australian Beach Volleyroos Announced for 2016 Asian Beach Volleyball Championships

Manly Volleyfest - 18-28 March 2016

Reigning World U23 Champions and Manly locals, Nikki Laird and Mariafe Artacho del Solar, will join the undisputed kings of the 2015/16 beach volleyball summer, Damien Schumann and Joshua Court, as part of the eight-team Volleyroos squad to take on Asia’s best in the Asian Beach Volleyball Championships at Manly Beach this month.

Volleyball Australia has also named two-time reigning Asian Champions, Chris McHugh and Isaac Kapa, along with 2012 London Olympian, Becchara Palmer, as this prestigious event heads Down Under for the very first time.

Schumann and Court were not beaten on Australian sand all summer, winning the Australian Championships along with all five State titles on offer, while Kapa and McHugh are the top ranked Australians on the World Rankings.Laird and del Solar are on the cusp of making their Olympic debuts in Rio later this year.

Sister duo Justine and Jordan Mowen (QLD) will join Laird and Artacho Del Solar while Palmer (SA) will partner Sarah Battaglenewomen teams. Bo Soderberg (SA/Denmark) and Cole Durant, who recently competed in Brazil willround off the Australian men’s teams.

The Asian Championships will be the jewel in the crown of the 2016 Manly Volleyfest, 10 days of world class beach volleyball played on one of the best beaches in the world.

The Manly Volleyfest features the Australian Beach Volleyball Tour Finals (18-20 March), the inaugural 4 Nations Cup (21-22 March), and the Asian Volleyball Confederation Beach Volleyball Championships (AVCBCH) (25-28 March).

“As we prepare for our Olympic qualification tournament in June the teams selected will have their best opportunity to shine at the Manly Volleyfest in an intensively competitive environment” Volleyball Australia President Craig Carracher said.

“Spectators will be treated to world class beach volleyball action when our Aussies take on a host of top level internationals on iconic Manly Beach.

"We are excited to host this event at the spiritual home of beach volleyball in Australia, Manly Beach, and even more excited that this will become a regular fixture on our calendar for the next three years,” Carracher said.

The Australian contingent will take on some of the world’s best talent representing nations including China, New Zealand, Thailand, Vanuatu, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Japan Qatar, Brazil and the United States.
